Keyboard Manipulation

Although this manual's discussion of how to use different features of ACE is assumes that you will be using the mouse, the same functionality can be achieved using keyboard commands alone.

Keyboard localization

Some users that are using a non-English keyboard may find that they are not able to produce the "@" symbol when adding email addresses. The solution is as follows:

If you are using Win95/98/NT, you can switch your keyboard to the English layout. You can do it in the Control Panel | Regional Settings | Input Locales. Add the English Layout. And make sure you have selected Enable indicator on taskbar.

Pressing the left alt + shift in an application will switch keyboard layouts. If you were adding an alias, when you try to type to which e-mail address you would like to forward, press left alt + shift to switch to the English keyboard. Pressing shift + 2 should produce an "@".

Selection changes

The tab key moves the cursor or object selection from object to object in a looped sequence. The shift-tab key combination moves the cursor or object selection in the opposite order. (Generally the selected object is surrounded by a dashed line, has a colored highlight, or is colored light purple, depending upon which platform you are using.)

Button activation

When a button (regular, radio, or toggle) is selected, pressing the spacebar causes the button to be activated.

Text manipulation

While in text fields, the following keys perform special tasks:

  • Holding the shift button while pressing the arrow keys causes the text to be selected.
  • Pressing the home key causes the cursor to move to the beginning of the text line that the cursor is on.
  • Pressing the end key causes the cursor to move to the end of the text line that the cursor is on.
