Installing ACEBefore you can use ACE, you must install it. ACE itself comes in two pieces. One part, the ACE server, must be installed on your Virtual Server. The other part, the ACE client, resides on your computer.Installing the ACE Server You don't need to do anything to install the ACE server. The first time you run the ACE client, it will contact your virtual server and cause the server side to automatically install itself. If ACE has trouble connecting to your server for the first time, simply contact support for help. Installing the ACE Client Before you can install the client, you need to download it to your computer. The download pages give specific instructions for installing ACE on your platform. Windows 95/98/NT When you download the install, a file called install.exe is placed on your hard drive. Depending upon how you downloaded it, you may have given it another name. Find this file and run it either by using the Run... option in your Start Menu or by double clicking the file in a file viewer window. The installer will be started and will guide you through the installation process. Follow all instructions given. Once the installer is finished, you will be able to run ACE. A shortcut to ACE will have appeared in the Programs area of your Start Menu. Some users won't use the start menu and will open ACE's folder intending to launch the application by double clicking its icon. This is fine--and does work--but there can be some confusion over which icon to double click. If you went to the directory where ACE was installed, you would see two items named "Ace". One has an icon that looks like a tiny window and the other's icon looks like a spade. The spade is not the ACE program--it is an icon (".ico") graphics data file. To start ACE you need to double click the icon that looks like a little window and not the spade icon. Macintosh When you download the install, a file called install is placed on your hard drive. Double click that file to start the installer. Follow any directions. When the install finishes, you will have a folder named "ACE" in your applications folder. Double click the ACE icon in that folder to start ACE. Note: ACE requires a PowerPC based Macintosh running Mac OS 7.6.1 or later. You need to have Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) 2.0 or later installed before downloading and installing ACE. The installer is MacBinary encoded and will automatically be decoded after downloading. If it does not, you can decode it using StuffIt Expander 4.5. Macintosh users running Mac OS X Server should download the generic UNIX installer (not the MacOS installer). Once downloaded, start up the Terminal application in the /System/Administration folder. Type "cd" in the window and then drag the folder containing install.bin over the Terminal window and drop it there. After the drag, make sure that the Terminal window is active and hit the Return/Enter key. Next, type "bash install.bin" and again hit the Return/Enter key. Follow the on screen instructions to choose where to install ACE and complete the installation. Once installed, you can double click the program "Ace" in the chosen install directory to start ACE. If you like, you can drag it onto your desktop to create a shortcut. A copy of the ACE launcher will also be automatically installed in your home directory. Solaris or Other UNIX If you aren't running Solaris or don't have Java installed, you will first need to download the Java 1.1.4 (or more recent) runtime from Sun's site. After you have downloaded and installed Java and downloaded the installer, you need to:
The installer will guide you through the selection of a Java VM and installation location. Once the installer completes, you should be able to run ACE. |
